Mile 12: Where Food is Cheap, yet infested with petty thieves

Mile 12: Where Food is Cheap, But So Are the Tricks of Petty Thieves

Mile 12 is one of the busiest suburbs in Lagos State, Nigeria. It is widely known as the go-to market for cheap and fresh foodstuffs. From tomatoes and pepper to yams and grains, traders come from all over to buy in bulk. Whether you're a wholesaler or just stocking up for the home, Mile 12 is where you get the best prices.

But while the food is affordable, there’s something else that comes cheap—crime.

Mile 12 is also known for the activities of pickpockets, phone snatchers, and petty thieves. These criminals don’t wear a different face. They blend in with the crowd, dressed like the regular buyers and sellers around. You won’t know who is who. Before you realize it, your phone, wallet, or even handbag may be gone.

The thieves take advantage of the chaos and human traffic. During rush hours, when people are pushing through the crowd or loading their goods, the pickpockets strike. They move fast, quietly, and usually in groups. Sometimes, one will distract you while another quickly grabs your phone or dips into your pocket.

This problem is especially common around the bus stops and along Ikorodu Road. If you’re commuting through that axis—either by public transport or driving—be extra careful. Keep your phone deep inside your bag or pocket. Avoid making calls in public or exposing your valuables, especially when stuck in traffic. Car windows should be rolled up, especially when slowing down near Mile 12.

Security agents do patrol the area, but with the crowd size and market noise, it’s hard to catch everyone. The best protection is to stay alert and hold your belongings tightly.

Mile 12 remains an important part of Lagos life. It's a market where families save money and traders earn a living. But while you're out to buy food at good prices, don’t let your guard down. Thieves are also shopping—but for careless victims.
