Rare Case of Polydontia: 11-Year-Old Girl Found with 81 Teeth

An 11-year-old girl in Minas Gerais, Brazil, was found to have 81 teeth, including 18 milk teeth, 32 permanent teeth, and 31 supernumerary teeth, a rare condition known as polydontia.

Discovered during a dental visit for milk tooth extraction at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, X-rays and cone beam computed tomography revealed the abnormal teeth distribution. Typically, polydontia involves only a few extra teeth, making this case exceptionally rare.

A rare mutation in chromosome 9 was identified, but its link to the condition is unclear, as the cause of supernumerary teeth may involve genetic and environmental factors. The girl, who has no known related genetic syndrome, is undergoing long-term multidisciplinary treatment, including tooth extractions and surgeries, to restore jaw health and function.

Her mother has thalassemia, but no genetic connection was confirmed. The case, published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Maxillofacial Surgery, highlights the importance of early detection through regular dental checkups.
