In a deeply disturbing case from East Kilbride, Scotland, 27-year-old postman Ewan Methven murdered his 21-year-old girlfriend, Phoenix Spencer-Horn, in November 2024.
On the night of the incident, after sharing a takeaway meal, Methven strangled, stabbed, and decapitated Phoenix in what he later described as an act driven by loneliness and jealousy over her work schedule.
Instead of reporting the crime immediately, Methven spent the next two days pretending Phoenix was still alive. He used her phone to send deceptive messages to her mother, drove her car around, and watched pornography on her phone over 170 times. He also attempted to buy drugs during this period. On November 18, he finally called the police, claiming he had blacked out during a drug-fueled episode and discovered her body afterwards.
When officers arrived, they found Phoenix’s mutilated body in their home. Methven confessed to the crime and was later sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 23 years before eligibility for parole.
The judge condemned his actions as "grotesque and depraved," highlighting the emotional toll on Phoenix’s family, who were denied the chance to say goodbye properly. The case shocked the nation and underscored the horrors of intimate partner violence.
