Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Biya to seek eighth term

Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya has announced plans to run for an eighth term in the 2025 elections, despite growing calls for leadership change.

Biya, who has ruled since 1982, made the declaration through his party, the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (RDPC).

His long rule has faced criticism over corruption, human rights abuses, and the ongoing Anglophone crisis. Many Cameroonians, especially the youth, are calling for new leadership, arguing that

Biya’s extended rule has stifled progress. However, his party remains powerful and well-organized, making it likely he will secure another term unless unexpected political shifts occur.
