Fatal MRI Accident in Long Island Due to Metal Necklace

A 61-year-old man died after being pulled into an MRI machine at Nassau Open MRI in Seabury, Long Island, New York, on July 16. The man accompanied a relative for a medical scan, the man ignored staff warnings and entered the MRI room while wearing a large metal necklace.

The MRI’s strong magnetic field instantly attracted the necklace, pulling him into the machine and causing suspected suffocation or cervical spine injuries. He exhibited a severe physical reaction and was rushed to North Shore University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the next day.

Nassau County police, including the homicide squad, are investigating the incident, though the man’s identity remains undisclosed. Medical experts, including Dr. Charles Winterfeldt and Dr. Payal Sud from North Shore University Hospital, emphasized the extreme danger of metal objects near MRI scanners, which can act like "missiles" due to the powerful magnetic field.

Strict safety protocols, requiring the removal of all metal and electrical objects, are critical to prevent such catastrophic incidents.
